Book of the Day, Mon, 31 Aug 2020 06:43:14

On this day our choice of outstanding sci-fi is Anathea N. Krrill’s “The Sphere” (https://t.co/lQEvqUfWhc). Sphere is an independently minded and independently authored exciting title, and in our never-ending tributes to norm-shattering worlds in all the galaxies of speculative fiction, we’re not regretting including this one on top of our list for today. In this case, we discovered a tale that is surely entertaining in its style. If we assume you share our enthusiasm for a good book, you should have a quick look at how sci-fi readers react. According to an obviously enthused reader, “The Sphere is a tale of a civiliation separated from earth for centuries and of an inter-being romance. The civilisation has evolved on quite idealistic lines, defined as being essential for the survival of a group of people who are dependent on each other and cut off from all outside sources of help. As the book progresses, it becomes clear that although the ideals are maintained on the surface, the reality is more complicated - and more familiar. I liked this subtity. I think the strength of the book is in the descriptions of this society, how it arose and developed, and how it might be escaped. I also liked that there were likeable characters, and enjoyed seeing their characters develop as we get to know them as the story unfolds. The inter-being romance raises the question - how does love transcend differences between people or between beings of completely different composition. Since this love becomes primarily associated with sex, I felt the question and its resolution was not fully developed. It still adds a nice twist to the story.” If you’ve been kind enough to read our lovingly crafted review, you should go the whole way and search for your own copy. If not, stay tuned until we discover the next epic science fiction author of the generation. We can only hope it’ll happen eventually.
